Chatting with Betsy
I had the great privilege of being interviewed by Betsy Wurzel, the Passionate World Talk Radio host. Betsy, herself, has an adult child with special needs, so she and I discovered we had quite a bit in common.
When you’re raising a mentally disabled child, you can easily feel like you’re all alone in the world. Family and friends often feel the need to give you their advice, oblivious to the fact that they have no clue what you’re actually going through, so their advice is as worthless as a bicycle with no tires or a dry swimming pool.
So what do you do when the medical “professionals” condemn you, the schools won’t listen to you, the church leadership judges you, and your closest associates – your family and friends – turn their back on you?
Although I usually faced the struggles and challenges alone, my husband always stood behind me. Some of you don’t even have that much support.
As I went through it, I learned some very important things…
- Never give up the search! There’s always an answer somewhere.
- Follow your gut instinct and listen to your child. Even if you can’t pinpoint the problem, that doesn’t mean there isn’t one.
- Never stop advocating for your child because they can’t advocate for themselves.
- Whenever possible, take time for yourself. You need it.
- And remember, you’re not alone. Find a friend to lean on; someone who may also need to lean on you.
I invite you now to listen to my interview with Betsy.
