Another Day, Another Challenge; The Biography of a Child with Williams Syndrome
What They Can’t Tell You
Are You a Persistent Advocate for Someone with Special Needs?
Do you fight for those with mental disabilities because they are unable to fight for themselves?
When my daughter was born with Williams syndrome, I was unprepared for the challenges we would face, and I learned a lot of things the hard way – through trial and error.
At the time of Michelle’s diagnosis, Williams syndrome had only been on the medical radar for 26 years, so most doctors had never heard of it; much less my neighbors and friends. And although the internet was an up-and-coming technology, I wasn’t online until Michelle’s early adolescence.
Now you can research everything. Back then, I didn’t know how to research anything.
And all the information I received from the Williams Syndrome Association (WSA) discussed developmental delays, learning disabilities, implementing an IEP for your school-aged child, and the heart problems that are normally very much a part of the life of children with Williams syndrome, often requiring surgery.
But Michelle wasn’t born with heart problems. As she grew, she developed acute mental health issues which led to chronic behavior problems. Her mental health issues were every bit as critical as the physical health issues of most children with Williams.
Unfortunately for me, the WSA was silent on that topic.
And because of her specific challenges, Michelle fell through the cracks of every service designed to support her needs.
As the author of “Another Day, Another Challenge: The Biography of a Child with Williams Syndrome,” I share the challenges I faced with Michelle – my unnecessary struggle with doctors, EMS personnel, and school faculty.
- I learned about a critical strategy the law prohibits doctors, hospitals, and DD Services from telling you.
- I discovered what most psychiatrists don’t know, and your child’s mental health will suffer tremendously as a result.
- I realized that even the best agencies are often too busy to take proper care of your loved one or hire honest staff members. Chronic theft was a problem.
“Another Day, Another Challenge” is for the strong and determined, who will do whatever it takes to care for their loved one.
