God is incredibly good, and I think a lot of His children take for granted the things that He does for them each and every day. And then, family or friends will comment, “Boy, were you lucky.” Well, I don’t believe in luck. Not good luck. Not bad luck. Everything I deal with in life is filtered through the fingers of God’s love, mercy, and protection. He never leaves me to face chance or luck. His hand is always on my life. And if I face difficult or tragic circumstances, I can trust God to safely see me through them, or I’ll meet Him on the other side.
Well, God has brought me through innumerable circumstances, and I wanted to share them to remind people to evaluate their lives and see what God has done for them. The more I share, the more God reminds me of what He’s done for me.
My husband and I were both in the United States Air Force, stationed in England. We met and got married there. We lived in a little town called Oundle, halfway between Cambridge and Peterborough. I was seven months pregnant with our first-born. One Saturday afternoon, we were sitting at home doing nothing when Floyd decided that he wanted to run into Cambridge and pick up a tire repair kit to fix his motorcycle tire. Back then, Floyd was young, energetic, and impulsive. So we hopped into the car and took off.
Floyd jumped onto the duel carriageway (freeway) and coasted into the right (fast) lane. (Remember, we were in England, and they drive on the left-hand side of the road. So their slow lane is on the left.) Down the road, a big rig was traveling in the left lane, and he was going mighty slow. He might have been fully loaded and was having trouble cresting the hill. Anyway, there was a little car trailing him at about 25 mph. And we were up to freeway speed, so we were doing about 60 when the driver of this little car decided that it was too inconvenient to wait for traffic to clear in the fast lane, and he pulled right out in front of us.
Floyd jammed on the brake. But instead of skidding into the back of that little car, our brakes pulled to the left. We were now sliding straight for the trailer of that semi tractor trailer truck. If we slammed into that trailer, our car might have gone underneath it. Floyd released the brake, and that threw us into a spin. The car spun around facing oncoming traffic and we landed on our side in the ditch. We stopped inches from a bridge embankment. Landing with a thump, the seat belt grabbed me and kept me from tumbling into Floyd. Nothing hit my stomach, so I never worried about the baby. Within minutes, emergency crews pulled us from the car. Since we were both wearing seat belts, we walked away from the accident with minor bruises and sore muscles.
For us to walk away from that accident was nothing short of a miracle.
- We didn’t plow into the back of the car.
- We didn’t slam into the semi or end up underneath his trailer.
- No other cars ran into us when we slid into the left lane and spun around.
- We didn’t hit the bridge embankment.
- We weren’t injured when the car landed on its side in the ditch.
- I didn’t go into premature labor.
- The baby was unharmed.
God specializes in miracles.
That night in bed, I cried and cried at the damage to our beautiful, metallic-blue, British car. I never even considered all the things God did for us that day. It wasn’t long and that car was a thing of the past. But I have never forgotten the way God protected us that chilly February afternoon.
Start looking for the blessings of God in your life. Trust me, you won’t have to look far.
