“For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”
Psalm 84:11 KJV
All good things come from God.
James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
The Lord provides His children with light and warmth just like the sun, and protects us from danger like a shield. He desires that we live righteously, and if we do, he promises to bless us with his favor (grace) and honor (glory). And as Psalm 84:11 says, “…no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”
“For the LORD God is a sun and shield…” God is a bright light in a dark world and as a shield, He protects us.
“…the LORD will give grace…” He will bestow upon us gifts and kindness that we haven’t earned or deserved. (That’s called grace.)
James 4:6 says, “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” If God only gives grace to the humble, then this verse applies only to the humble. And with grace, He will also give glory.
“…And glory…” Glory means “honor.” And God only honors the humble. For it’s only the humble who honor Him.
In I Samuel 2:30, God says, “…them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.” So how do the humble honor God? Not only by their words, but also by their lives.
In Mark 7:6, Jesus said, “…Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” (Isaiah 29:13)
“...No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” Uprightly means “righteously, in a way that pleases God.”
Only the humble can walk uprightly because the opposite of humility is pride, and pride is a sin. To hang onto your pride is to reject humility, which means that you’re trusting in yourself and not God. But for those who humble themselves before God and honor Him in all they do by walking uprightly, He will give them grace and glory, and He will not keep any good thing from them.
