“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
John 6:35 KJV
In John 6:51, Jesus said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
Jesus offers eternal life to anyone who comes to Him; to anyone who believes on Him. Those who trust in Christ for salvation will find that the spiritual void in their lives is filled; they will never again suffer hunger or thirst for spiritual food because Christ is that food.
Matthew 26:26-28 says, “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
Remission means forgiveness. It’s only through Christ’s sacrifice that we have God’s forgiveness. And it’s only through God’s forgiveness that we have eternal life.
Our bodies need daily sustenance. Without food and water, they die. But our spirits are born dead. Without Jesus, the Bread of Life, they can’t live.
Ephesians 2:4-5 says, “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)”
Quickened means to be “made alive.” We’re born spiritually dead, but God gives us spiritual life through Christ. And without Christ, there is no life.
In John 6:32-33, Jesus said, “…Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”
During their journey from Egypt to Canaan, God fed the Israelites with manna, which He rained down from Heaven, but it only sustained them for a short time. Jesus is the true bread from heaven. He is the Bread of God that came down from Heaven to give eternal life unto the world. And just like He broke bread with His disciples at the Passover, His body was broken for the sins of the world.
