“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”
Ephesians 5:11 KJV
I Corinthians 1:9 says, “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Fellowship is a good thing. God desires us to have fellowship with Him, with His Son, Jesus, and with other believers.
I John 1:3 says, “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
Fellowship is an encouraging time of communion. But for it is going to glorify the Lord and edify other believers, it must be enjoyed in the Light of Christ.
In John 8:12, Jesus said “…I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
The dictionary defines fellowship as “a group of people who share common interests, goals, experiences, or views.” Therefore, there can be no fellowship between a holy God and sinful man. Yet if Christ lives in us, His Spirit gives us life and enables us to have fellowship with God.
Ephesians 5:8 says, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”
At one time, we were all children of darkness, but now that we are in the Light of Christ, we are to have nothing to do with the unfruitful works of darkness. What are the unfruitful works of darkness? Anything that glorifies sin, attitudes that displease the Lord, or acts of defiance or disobedience. (Ephesians 5:3-7)
I John 1:6-7 say, “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
You cannot have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness and walk in the Light at the same time. It is not possible. According to I Peter 2:9, we’ve been called out of darkness into His marvellous Light. God’s marvelous Light or the unfruitful works of darkness; the choice is yours.
