Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock…
Matthew 7:24 KJV
A rock is a solid foundation, and a house built on a solid foundation will stand against the stormy weather.
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus said to Peter, “…upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
He was referring to Himself, because Jesus is our foundation.
Psalm 18:2 says, “The LORD is my rock…” He is the Rock on which He built His church.
There is no foundation more sure or solid than the Lord. And a wise man builds his house on the rock; not the sand or shifting ground. So Jesus is saying that someone who obeys Him is just like a man who builds his house on a solid foundation.
Then verse 25 says, “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
If you will take the time to listen to the voice of Jesus and obey Him, then when the storms of life pound you with one catastrophe after another, your faith will stand because it’s founded upon the Rock of Christ.
The word wisdom means “the state of being wise.” And the dictionary describes a wise person as one who is “gifted with discernment.” But what is discernment? It is the ability to “perceive clearly with the mind or senses.” Perceive what? That which is good and right and holy. According to the dictionary, wise means “prudent, sensible, and discreet.” So a wise person doesn’t just know what’s right, he does what’s right.
God expects two things from us:
- We’re to listen to what Jesus tells us. “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine…”
- And we’re to obey Him. “…and doeth them…”
Then, and only then, does God consider us to be wise.
However, verses 26-27 say, “And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
Jesus says that a wise person “heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them…” So to be wise, you must be in the Word of God to know what Jesus is saying. Only then can you listen and obey Him. But if you choose to ignore or reject His words, the storms of life will completely destroy you.
