As an author, I knew the importance of building a platform through public speaking. But I was at a loss to know what kind of message I’d give to the secular world because my life revolved around Jesus so much that I seemed to bring Him up in every conversation. So I had a problem.
How could I discuss…
- The unique challenges I faced in dealing with a child with Williams syndrome.
- How I handled the misunderstandings at school.
- What I had to do to get the doctors to listen to me.
- How my wisdom and ingenuity would guide and direct some other parent struggling with similar challenges…
…when I relied so heavily on God for guidance and the wisdom I needed to make the right decisions to help me survive each day.
My talk would have revolved around my faith in God and His strength, His power, His wisdom, His help, and all that He had done. And that’s what the other parents need to hear, but it’s most certainly not what they want to hear. Neither do the schools or the doctors.
Then it occurred to me that maybe I could be an inspirational speaker and motivate other ladies about living for Jesus since that is what I love to talk about! Boy, did I get excited, so I went to God in prayer. I said, “Lord, I don’t know what to do. Where do I even start?” Speaking to my heart, God replied. “Marj, you always start with your local church.” So I approached my pastor. That was a year ago. It took a lot longer than I expected to get approval and arrange that first conference, but Hilltop Baptist Church is hosting a ladies conference on September 21, 2013, and I will be speaking.
I believe that this is something God wants me to pursue. You see, He’s blessed every one of His children with gifts, and then He calls them to use those gifts for His honor and glory. Romans 11:29 says, “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.” Whatever God has called you to do, be assured, He will supply the gifts needed to do the job He wants done. All you need to do is answer the call.
