Jesus loves our children far more than we do and He watches out for them in ways that we can’t, simply because He is omnipresent and can be with them everywhere they go at all times.
I could have easily lost my son that day. I’d taken my seven-year-old to a doctor’s appointment down at Children’s Hospital and I left my two older children with a neighbor around the corner while I was gone. I did not foresee anything happening that could seriously endanger either of my children.
While I was gone, my ten-year-old daughter stayed at Paul’s house, playing with her girls. But Toby, my twelve-year old, got permission from Paula to ride his bicycle. Because of his age, Toby rode more in the street than on the sidewalk and he also cruised from street to street and from street to sidewalk. He loved riding his bike.
Well, Paula lived directly behind us on another street, but our two streets intersected only a couple of houses away. So Toby retrieved his bicycle from our garage and cruised down the street, coasting up a driveway ramp onto the sidewalk, down the sidewalk, and back onto the street.
While Toby was riding his bicycle, our next door neighbor jumped into her car and started to back out of her driveway. Not realizing that her car was moving, Toby cruised up her driveway ramp and ran right into the back of her car. That knocked him off his bicycle and since the car was moving backward, he actually fell underneath the car.
Because Toby had ridden up her driveway ramp from an angle, he was in her blind spot and she didn’t see him. However, she felt something hit the back of her car. Jerking to a stop, she looked into her rear view mirror but didn’t see anything. It was at that moment when her eight-year-old daughter, standing directly across the street, started yelling. “Mom! Don’t move! Toby’s under the car!”
That day, Jesus protected our son from being run over by a car, where he could have been killed, seriously injured, or permanently maimed. As it was, he walked away from the incident. Paula was horrified at how close he came to death during the time in which she had accepted responsibility for his safety and well being. But if the truth be known, I could have been home and it still could have happened because I wouldn’t have been outside directing the bike-riding activity of my twelve-year-old to ensure his safety. But Jesus has gone with him everywhere, to places I can’t go – Iraq, Korea – and He’s still with him today. Jesus loves my son more than I ever could, and He has taken better care of him than I ever will.
